The Law National Aptitude Test — Section A

This paper is a full simulation of Section A of the LNAT: 42 multiple-choice questions drawn from 12 argumentative passages, three or four on each, to be answered in 95 minutes. It sits in the Standard tier of the series. Set a little gentler than the real test, to build accuracy and confidence. The LNAT does not test legal knowledge, and you are not expected to know a single statute or case. It tests whether you can read argumentative prose closely, work out exactly what it claims and how, and reason about it without slipping into the small errors that careless readers make.

Structure and marking

Marks	1 mark for each correct answer. Total 42.
Negative marking	None. A blank scores exactly what a wrong answer scores, which is nothing.

How to work this paper

Read each passage once for its argument before you look at its questions. Ask yourself in one sentence what the writer is ultimately arguing for, then return to the exact words for any detail a question depends on.
Think in passages, not questions. Ninety-five minutes for forty-two questions is a little over two minutes each, but the passages are not equal. Budget close to eight minutes a passage: two to read it, the rest to answer and check.
Answer only from the passage. Nothing you know about the topic from elsewhere can earn a mark, and it will regularly cost you one.
Leave nothing blank. There is no penalty for a wrong answer. With four options a blind guess is right one time in four; after eliminating one it is one in three, and after two it is even money. Always eliminate first, then commit.
Use two passes. Settle what you can, mark the two or three that resist you for review, and return with the time that remains. Do not let one stubborn question eat the time of five easy ones.

Your answers save automatically. If your connection drops or the page reloads, you return to the same paper with your answers intact and the clock where it should be.

Examination conditions

Read this before you begin. These rules are enforced automatically.

The examination runs in fullscreen. If you leave fullscreen, switch tabs, or move to another application, the question paper is hidden immediately and a warning is recorded.
You are allowed three warnings. On the third, your paper is submitted automatically and cannot be reopened. Reloading the page does not clear warnings.
Copying, printing, right-clicking and developer shortcuts are disabled. Attempts are logged for the invigilator.
Opening this examination on a second device will end the sitting.
You may attempt this paper once. The clock runs on the server and continues even if you close the page.

When the timer reaches zero the paper is submitted for you, with everything you have answered. Section B of the LNAT, the forty-minute essay, is not part of this paper and is assessed separately.
